Der Bremer Roland

The statue of Roland in the marketplace is a landmark of Bremen. Roland was a knight of the Great Charlemagne and he stands there to protect the right to the free market. The statue was raised in 1404 and was kept intact during the WWII by the citizens of Bremen. The legend says that as long as Roland stands, Bremen will always be safe.
